KARSTEIN DJUPDAL MUSIC AND COMPOSITIONS

Abstract Music

For violin, guitar and percussion. Based on «Etude aux Chemins de Fer» by Pierre Schaeffer. (2010)

In 1948 Pierre Schaeffer composed the piece «Etude aux Chemins de Fer» which consists entirely of sounds from the railway. He wanted to free the sounds from their semantic meaning, and instead let us hear them as music, that is pitches and rhythms.

My piece has abstracted these sounds and transcribed them to acoustic instruments; violin, guitar and percussion. The form and structure of the piece is the same as the original. With sounds from real instruments, not being distracted by associations to the railway, it might be easier to hear the music itself in the piece.
